Qld: Federal Government plans laws for aquaculture
The Federal Government says new aquaculture projects in Queensland will be policed
by strict new laws to be introduced next year.
Environment Minister ROBERT HILL says the laws will act as a safety net to catch operators
not adequately regulated by the State Government.
Senator HILL says the regulations require new operators to apply for a permit from
the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority before discharging waste.
The minister says the Queensland Government is jeopardising the reef's health by not
properly regulating all aquaculture projects.
Senator HILL says the Federal Government has been left no alternative but to move to
overcome deficiencies in the State's regime.
The Queensland Government and industry will be asked to submit comments on the new laws.
