Fed: Govt puts up ASIO amendments to satisfy Senate committee
The federal government has agreed to more changes to its plans to increase powers forthe nation's domestic spy agency in a bid to get them through the Senate.
Attorney-General DARYL WILLIAMS says the government will propose a series of amendmentsto its laws covering the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
It follows a series of recommendations from an all-party Senate committee calling forchanges to the government's proposals.
The biggest concession from the government is to include former judges in the groupof people able to issue warrants to ASIO for raids.
The committee had wanted only retired judges to be able to issue the warrants, butthe government has only agreed to include them along with sitting federal judges and magistrates.
Mr WILLIAMS says the government couldn't agree to all the Senate committee's recommendationsas they would undermine the proposed laws.
